Dissertation Project Summary

Oforiwaa Pee’s dissertation investigates the impact of transport interventions on urban accessibility and informal transport systems, in contexts where ‘informal’ transport modes serve a substantial portion of city transportation systems. The research answers questions about the South African government’s bus rapid transport (BRT) interventions and the excessive contribution of external financing agencies to BRT. Oforiwaa Pee uses quantitative and qualitative data to examine Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya BRT system. She assesses the impact of foreign donor-financed BRT interventions on accessibility when introduced amid informal public transportation in South Africa.
